It is critical that the next generation of workers get properly prepared for careers and the economy of the future.  It is clear that most jobs from here on out will require a basic knowledge of math and science.  STEM activities create problem solvers and critical thinkers.  These are valuable skills that some students are not actively exposed to.  The U.S. Department of Labor shows that 15 out of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014 require significant math or science preparation.

In the next six years:

  • STEM jobs are projected to grow by 17 percent compared to fewer than 10 percent for other
  • professions
  • 2.8 million STEM job openings are predicted
  • Nearly one fourth of all students fail to graduate with their class
  • STEM workers typically earn 26 percent more than those in non-STEM positions

Currently, many high-paying STEM jobs go unfilled because candidates lack the necessary technical skills, training or postsecondary degrees needed.
